Mara Technology Opens South Africa’s first Made in Africa smartphone

Mara Technology is about to make Tech in Africa bigger than ever as they are open to south africa’s first made in africa smartphone.

Mara phones announced on thursday, they will produce its “Made in Africa“ phones along with a facility in Rwanda.

The Mara phone is developed and produced on the continent. Its first manufacturing plant was opened in Kigali, Rwanda, just over a week ago.

Mara Group launched two smartphones two weeks ago, describing them as the first “Made in Africa” models. In South Africa, the Durban plant is expected to create over 1,500 jobs.

Mara is a young and dynamic African group with operations in technology, banking, real estate and infrastructure. Established in 1996, Mara has been active on the continent for 23 years. It has grown from a small computer hardware trading firm in East Africa to a multi-sector group with investments and operations in 25 countries across the African continent.

Mara founder, Ashish Thakkar, said at the inauguration of the smartphone manufacturing plant in the South African coastal city of Durban that, “today proves that we Africans do dare to dream, and also deliver on our dreams.“

The South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, acknowledged that his country was on the move toward greatness. “The facility will not only assemble smartphone components but also develop them,“ he said.

Meanwhile, the Mara Group said that it would sell its Mara X and Mara Z smartphones across Africa for affordable prices.

Mara Group’s blog said the plant was set to produce just over 1,2 million smartphone handsets annually.

The company said the staff complement at the Durban plant would comprise 90% youth and 60% women.
