How to Go Back to Old Discord Mobile UI

Hey Guys! It’s my first post here in months and the first of the year. I’d just like to wish everyone a happy new year even though it’s been 12 days after. Everyone’s probably already forgotten their New Year’s resolutions by now. So, while everyone was preparing for the Holidays, Discord had something else in mind. They decided to change the layout of their mobile design. The change was supposed to be aimed at enhancing the user experience while using the app. But, just like all the big platforms out there, the developers and designers modeled it according to how they think the users should like it and not how they want it.

I mean, this could easily have been pushed as a Beta test to first see if anyone even liked the design, and if there were positive comments, they could release it as a full-on update on app stores but they went on to make it a compulsory update, and oh! you have to see the backlash. Till today, they probably don’t check their comment section on Twitter because people are just cooking them there.

Now that you’ve unknowingly updated your application and you’ve joined the bandwagon of those who absolutely hate the new layout, how can you change the layout from the new to the old one? well, here’s how to go about that.

How to Get Old Discord Layout Back

For you to do this, the first thing you need to do is;

  1. Go to the Discord application on your Smartphone.
  2. Tap on “You.”
  3. Hit the settings icon at the top-right corner of your screen.
  4. Scroll down and tap on “Appearance.”

Once you’ve done this, you need to make sure that the “Sync across clients” toggle is ON for this to work. If not, the changes to your Discord mobile UI will not reflect on your Smartphone. After you’ve done this, the next thing you need to do is get a laptop. Once you’re on your laptop:

  1. Open your preferred browser.
  2. Go to discord.com/app
  3. Log into your Discord account.
  4. Once in the discord homepage, you’ll need to open the console tab of the browser. If you use a MacBook, use “Command+Option+J” and if you use a Windows, use “Ctrl+Shift+I”
  5. The console tab should now be open, on the tab, you’d have to paste this code:
let wpRequire;
window.webpackChunkdiscord_app.push([[ Math.random() ], {}, (req) => { wpRequire = req; }]);

let UserSettingsActions = Object.values(wpRequire.c).find(x => x?.exports?.PreloadedUserSettingsActionCreators).exports;
let ProtobufTypes = Object.values(wpRequire.c).find(x => x?.exports?.BoolValue).exports;

UserSettingsActions.PreloadedUserSettingsActionCreators.updateAsync("appearance", data => {
    data.mobileRedesignDisabled = ProtobufTypes.BoolValue.create({value: true})
}, UserSettingsActions.UserSettingsDelay.INFREQUENT_USER_ACTION)

Once the code is pasted successfully in the console tab, tap on ENTER or RETURN on your keyboard and you should see your Discord mobile layout change in real-time on your Smartphone.

How to Change Discord UI to the New Layout

If for some reason, you want to revert to the new UI after using this method without having to uninstall your application and reinstall again. Here’s how to go about that:

  1. Go to your App Drawer.
  2. Open the Discord application.
  3. Tap on the “You” tab.
  4. Scroll down and tap on “Appearance.”
  5. Toggle the “Sync across clients” OFF.

There you have it! This is how you can at any time, change your Discord mobile layout between the old and the new versions. If any of these steps were not clear to you and you need a visual representation, here’s a YouTube video we’ve found that quickly demonstrates these steps:
