Being a founder of a startup that turns into a great company is really a difficult task that requires strength to take in anything, i decided to interview Tanimu Hassan the Founder and CEO behind printhag. Great designers solve real problems.

So, for designers who may be interested in pursuing entrepreneurial paths, what does it take to make the leap? We interviewed one designer-turned-CEO to find out Tanimu Hassan, Graphics designer and now founder of Printhag.

He shares the top skills he learned as a designer and why they transfer so well to the world of entrepreneurship.

  • Please Sir, can you tell us your full name and about yourself?

My name is Tanimu Hassan, the founder/CEO of Printhag Ltd.

I’m an ardent Designer, Brand Strategist, and author of Set Your Own Stage the entrepreneur’s guide to branding. I am married and I love to travel and eat cakes.

I always welcome opportunities to share with Creatives and Entrepreneurs, the 21st century ways to strategically position their brands for optimum growth and what value an investment in design brings into the equation.

I have a Bachelor and Masters degree in Industrial Design from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Bauchi and the Federal University of technology Akure (FUTA) respectively.

Printhag Limited was founded in 2010 and registered with the CAC in 2011 as a Limited Liability Company (LTD) immediately after I graduated from ATBU Bauchi. Our office is located in Abuja, Nigeria.

I am a devout believer of Jesus Christ and that has shaped my character and personality in more ways than one.  My girlfriend now turned wife has also contributed in putting my life into what it is today.

  • Why Are You Passionate About What You Do?

I’ve got a heart for entrepreneurs and that defies my area of expertise in design and business.

  • Can You Tell Me About A Tough Day You Had At Work And How You Pushed Through?

Let me share an experience that happened just a few weeks ago. I was in the middle of a publication for a youth magazine called Sceptre magazine and had to travel out of state to Ilorin for some reason. This was a great challenge as the design source files for this project was with me.

 In other to meet up with the launching date of this magazine, my team at Printhag and I had to use WhatsApp video calls to effect corrections in all the pages of the magazine… one page at a time.

Though stressful, we were still able to meet up with delivery in due time.

  • What Have You Failed At?

I failed at not being able to hold people to heart even when offended. Somehow, I see myself still forgiving them and opening up my arms to welcome them.

  • How Is It Like To Manage A Company Like Printhag?

It’s being an amazing experience so far though it requires teamwork, discipline and focus.  

  • How Do You Respond When A Client Gives You Harsh Criticism?

Simply remain patient and follow them gently.

  • What Key Metrics Do You Use To Track Your Design’s Success?

I’ll rather be King than rich. Being King gives me access, platform and room for influence.

Earlier this year, I was called to join the Attachi team. A Non-governmental and cultural Advocacy Organization, poised to document, archive, and promote the heritage and values of the Gbagyi/Gbari people, of Central Nigeria.

It’s being an amazing experience so far.

  • How Do You Stay Abreast Of The Latest Design Trends?

Regular research, willingness to be flexible and adapt to changes as the need arises.  

  • What Is Color Theory And Why Is It Important In Graphic Design?

Colour theory is a term used to describe the collection of rules and guidelines regarding the use of colour in art and design, as developed since their early days. It informs the design of colour schemes, aiming at visual appeal and effective communication.

Colour is a very important tool in graphic design as it can be used to attract attention, organize content, emphasize elements, evoke emotion and help a design look aesthetically pleasing.
